Liverpool vs. Manchester United

To first explain the name of blog, Fergie’s Lads, is referring to Manchester United’s coach Sir Alex Ferguson and the lads being the players.  This blog will go in depth about Manchester United and try to help people understand soccer and the culture better.
This Saturday at 7 AM Manchester United will play Liverpool in the FA Cup.  This is one of the fiercest rivalries in the world.  Bigger than the Yankees vs. Red sox, Auburn vs. Alabama or any American sport rivalries.  These teams have a mutual hatred for each other and bragging rights are on the line.  Two recent events will add more fuel to the fire in this turbulent match-up.  Liverpool had previously been the most successful English team with 18 titles.  Liverpool constantly insulted Man U proclaiming they would never overtake them more titles.  This year, after two decades of success Manchester United overtook them with their 19th title this year becoming the most successful English club.

After years of insults the Manchester United fans have made it clear that they are the most successful club.  The tensions on and off the field have been high because of this most recent change.
Luis Suarez one of Liverpool’s best players received an eight game ban for racially abusing a Manchester United player Patrice Evra.  Racism is a sad aspect of European soccer that an overwhelming majority of fans are disgusted by but those few ruin it.  Liverpool wore shirts to give support for Suarez, which only angered more people.  Passionate fans love the team and the players as much as they do their family so when they get insulted it becomes very personal.  Naturally they protect their players and get defensive which can lead to some confrontations.

The rivalry between these clubs is already fierce but with these recent events it will be a hot contest.  If you’re up at 7 AM on Saturday check out the game on Fox Soccer.
